FAQs
Where do we get our peanuts?
Our jars are packed with Hi Oleic peanuts. A bit like people, they’re all a bit different. We choose the good sorts. Most come from Australia and Brazil, with the odd batch from Argentina.
ARE THERE AFLATOXINS IN YOUR PEANUTS?
Aflatoxins are natural toxins produced by fungi that can show up on crops like corn, peanuts, and tree nuts. The levels are strictly regulated in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world, so you can enjoy Pic’s Peanut Butter no worries.
Most of our peanuts come from Australia and Brazil, with the odd batch from Argentina. After harvest, they’re stored in shells, tested on the farm, and checked again after shelling. Each batch arrives with a Certificate of Analysis confirming it’s passed moisture, oil, and aflatoxin tests.
South American peanuts get extra testing at our border to ensure levels are below 15 parts per billion (ppb). Most of our peanuts test under 4 ppb. Australian peanuts skip this step due to shared food standards.
Once here, we roast them, cutting aflatoxin levels by another 60-80%, and even test the finished product to keep everything safe.
How do I remove the label?
Our jars make lovely vases, trendy drinking glasses, gorgeous storage for tea, coffee or nuts and bolts. We love that people reuse them.
Removing the label is easy:
- Fill the jar with hot (not boiling) water and wait 30 seconds.
- Peel the label off while the jar is warm.
- For any sticky bits, rub with peanut oil or vinegar.
Avoid soaking or dishwashing beforehand—it’ll just make things messier!
Any allergens I need to know about?
We take allergies seriously. To keep things simple and safe, our peanut butter factory only makes peanut butter, and our suppliers process peanuts separately from other crops. Regular testing confirms no cross-contamination. Other products like Pic’s Peanut & Chocolate Butter, Pic’s Crunchy Almond Butter, Pic’s Seed & Nut Mix, and Pic’s Salt & Pepper Peanut Butter are made in a separate factory.
Why not organic?
There are some good reasons we don’t go that way.
Pic’s Peanut Butter uses high-quality Hi Oleic peanuts for their flavour and health benefits. Growing organic Hi Oleic peanuts is tricky. They need careful management for pests and fungi like aflatoxins, which can mean spraying up to 10-12 times a year. Only approved herbicides are used, limited in volume, frequency, and type, all meeting Aotearoa New Zealand’s food-safe standards.
How do I store peanut butter?
Keep your jar out of direct sunlight and avoid adding moisture. The pantry is best. Avoid the fridge, as chilling solidifies the fats and makes it go hard. Since Pic’s Peanut Butter has no emulsifiers, it will separate a bit, with the oil rising to the top and salt settling at the bottom. When you first open the jar, grab a sturdy table knife, go right to the bottom, and give it a good stir.
How do I stop it going dry?
Since Pic’s Peanut Butter has no emulsifiers, it will separate a bit, with the oil going up and salt going down. Stir it really well with a sturdy knife when you first open the jar, going right to the bottom. Storing it upside down can help, but make sure the lid is on tight (and you’ll still need to stir before spreading). If the last bit gets dry, it’s still great in smoothies, protein balls, or baked treats. Or turn it into a quick satay sauce—just add the other ingredients and shake it up!
Oh, and avoid the fridge. It makes everything hard.
Why is Smooth so runny?
It’s made that way! We don’t add emulsifiers to keep it solid or extra oil to make it runny, it’s all down to the natural oils in the peanuts. Just right for drizzling, baking, or spreading.
Don’t forget that Smooth needs a good mix with a sturdy table knife. Go right to the bottom and give it a thorough stir. Otherwise, it’ll be too runny on top and too dry on the bottom. Nobody wants that.
Oh, and if you’re looking to mix things up, give our new Pic’s Smoochy Peanut Butter a go. It’s the perfect blend of Smooth and Crunchy.

What on earth is Pic’s Peanut Butter World?
Pic's Peanut Butter World is the home of all things Pic’s in sunny Whakatū Nelson, New Zealand
What makes Pic’s Peanut Butter so special?
We use the finest Hi Oleic peanuts, sustainably grown in Australia, Brazil, and sometimes Argentina. These peanuts are packed with protein, heart-healthy oleic acids, and fibre—and they’re delicious.
We’ve come a long way from Pic’s garage and that old concrete mixer, but we still make peanut butter the same way: roasting the best peanuts and squishing them—once for crunchy, twice for smooth. No nasties, no weird stuff.
We’re a Really Good company making Really Good peanut butter. It’s not just for toast! See all the ways we enjoy Pic’s Peanut Butter on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, or visit us in sunny Whakatū Nelson at Pic’s Peanut Butter World.
Why no crunchy Peanut Butter Slugs?
What even is a Slug? It’s a 30g sachet of Pic’s Peanut Butter Smooth. But hold on just a peanut squishing second, what about all the Crunchy lovers? The problem with Crunchy Slugs is simple. It’s the bits. They’re too big to go in and too big to come out! Think of this as your chance to find some love for Smooth, just like Pic has.
What’s better for the planet: plastic or glass jars?
It’s a hot topic in the packaging world, with plenty of opinions and innovations on the way.
All our jars and pails can be recycled curbside—just wash them first (glass jars are dishwasher-safe; plastic ones need hand washing). The plastic jars we use have lower carbon emissions from freight, since most of them are made in here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Glass jars have to be imported though.
Long term, we’d love a circular peanut butter economy—peanut butter kegs, anyone? For now, we’re working with our glass supplier to source Aotearoa New Zealand recycled glass.
Is Pic’s Peanut Butter safe for dogs?
Absolutely. Pic’s Peanut Butter is just peanuts and salt (or not, if you prefer), that’s it. So it’s a top treat for your best mate. Go for the unsalted version of the good stuff, and keep it as a treat, not a main meal. Chuck it in a Kong toy to keep them busy, or slap a bit on the wall at bath time. They’ll love you for it, and it’s a good laugh to watch!
NZ Blind Low Vision Guide Dogs are one of our partner charities, and their guide dog puppies are happy consumers of Pic’s Peanut Butter.
